Agriculture
Togo is at least 75% sustenance farming. With a rapidly expanding population less land is available to produce enough food necessary for a healthy and sustainable country. Simultaneously, soil fertility is depleting and the family farmers who's livelihood is the basis for the economy are unable to feed themselves properly. I t very much appears to many farming families that there is little that they can do to better their situation. In our observations this has a large part to play in the creation and sustaining of strong feelings of despair, pessimism and a need for outside help.

A "Model Farmer" sharing his knowledge with others.
AEP has studied and tried a few teaching methods for rural, adult education and has developed a successful model that has proven to educate, inspire and motivate farmers. Simply put, this method is "farmer to farmer" education facilitated by the African Education Project. We identify "Model Farmers" and then create seminars that bring in farmers who are ready to learn new techniques. Over the course of 3 - five day courses the farmers stay with and learn from another model farmer who teaches them about what he is doing in their own language. We feel that this practical approach is actually cutting edge in its ability to accelerate not only the farmer's knowledge but also their motivation to take control of their situation and turn their farms into places of abundance and sustainability.
